CREATIVE PROFILE

Nikita Richardson is a disability rights activist, advocate, and universal designer.

A love of craft and design permeates every landscape architecture project that lands on her desk. This often leads her to research and explore new materials and processes that will allow for the most access out of her design. She strongly believes there is no point in designing a place if a minority group is going to be excluded based on their abilities whether or not that is intentional. If Nikita puts time, effort, and passion into a project she wants to share that with a large scope of people.

Nikita believes that landscape architecture is the key to making rights to wrongs within communities that have been affected by mismanagement, lack of funding, inaccessibility, and gentrification.

Growing up in NYC Nikita saw firsthand the physical, social, political, and economic effects of gentrification and inaccessibility within an urban setting. This fueled her interest in developing landscapes that would work for majority and minority groups.

The execution is key, and this professional has a strong belief in materials and craftsmanship. Graduated from SUNY ESF in the spring of 2021, Nikita Richardson is more than elated to join the landscape architecture force and providing insight into universal and accessible design.

WHY HAVE A FOCUS IN UNIVERSAL AND ACCESSIBLE DESIGN?

Nikita Richardson does not see the purpose of putting her heart and soul into a design if it is going to exclude users on the basis of their race, economic status, sexual identity, housing situation, physical and cognitive ability.

Nikita wants people from all corners of the world to find landscapes that makes them feel safe, heard, and important.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP OF YOUR DESIGN PROCESS?

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT!

You as the designer have no right to determine the value of your work. That is the job of the community and users of the space.
